To operate the One Wheel - you simply step on with your back foot first, then with your front foot, and sensors pick up that you’re balanced. To start moving forwards you simply lean forward, and lean back to slow down.

Kyle Doerksen, the inventor, wanted to simulate the feeling of snowboarding on land, and that is the most similar feeling we can liken it to. To turn you just lean your body. All other electric skateboards use handheld remote controls to stop you, this is hands free and much more intuitive.

It just takes a couple minutes to get used to, especially using the ‘Classic’ mode of riding. There are three modes of riding, which you change using a downloadable app. The Classic is for easy riding, and for those just starting. It keeps your speed around 12-15 kph, and slows you down if you try and go faster to make sure you don’t crash.

The Extreme mode is the best to use once you have some experience - it doesn’t limit your speed, and gives you a bit more freedom of movement. The Elevated mode lifts the nose more readily for inclines, or for skate parks.
