Course: Tour De Indian Arm
Despite the gloomy weather forecast the weather turn out pretty good.
Racers started rolling into Deep Cove around 11 AM and were keen to paddle. The event was being hyped south of the border by Brandon Nelson who was posting some provocative trash talking on the Whatcom Paddlers web group. Hardly anybody bit, maybe it was a foreshadowing of Canada's lack of confidence. There were some strategies running back and forth for how the utilize the female paddlers to best optimize points. Pawns in the larger chess game??? Ooops I had better be careful here. Just kidding.
By the 12:15 pre-race meeting the grass by Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre was littered with all sorts of cool surf skis, stand-up paddle board, and racers stretching out. I liked to get the pre-race meeting out of the way early so I can get a good warm-up. I feel too many races have the Pre-Race 15 minutes prior to the start and seeing most of us competitors are hitting the "geezer" category we need more time to warm-up.
This was the first year for a SUP category and with very little advertising 7 SU paddlers showed up. We plan to run a pure SUP race later in the season. The left 10 minutes prior to the start on the 10 km circular course on which they seemed to have a head wind for the entire route. My hat goes off to them as the course ended up being a bit of a washing machine.
As paddlers start to assemble it was obvious that USA recruited their "A" team, whereas Canada had our "eh?" team. Kiesling and Newton in a double, Brandon and Heather Nelson, DJ and Kirk C. The scary part is that there were other powerhouses south of the border who weren't present. Vancouver's local surf ski enthusiasts have been taking the event seriously putting lots of prep training. Ian Mackenzie from Victoria and other islanders, like Nathan M, Derek C. were present to help bolster the ranks. They even brought their own cheerleader Kathleen.
The start was pretty good, there was a bit of bumping and shoving, nothing out of the ordinary. Groups started to form around the doubles. One year I am going to institute a "drafting like boats"
rule just to see what happens.
The course started out flat and there was some current to pick up as we headed to the 2nd Narrows turn. At the mark there was still enough water so no portage was necessary. We were in "spring tide" cycle with Low lows and and High high tides and the 2nd Narrows turn was just off the Maplewood Mud Flats. This is a great birding area with an Osprey Falcon nests in the area.
After the turn there were some motor boat wakes to ride but not too much. A couple of weeks prior to the race I did a great downwind paddle on this section. When we reached Maple Beach reflective waves from motor wash was starting to churn up the water, creating some grief for a few paddlers. The next leg to Boulder had the waves hitting you at the beam and people were starting to fatigue. The extra effort required to balance added to the fatigue and Reid and I started to see our speed fall off. After Boulder Island it was like paddling in mud, I don't whether it was the current or fatigue but our speed kept dropping off. During crossing from Jug to the finish we could barely crack 10 kph. In general mix of the day was a sail boat race, plus an disagreeable powerboater who was trying to dock at the Government Whart.
Canada won the battle at the Tour de Indian Arm but it wasn't enough to win the war. USA established enough of a points lead at the Dan Harris Challenge to again win the THINK International Surf Ski Challenge. Deep Cove Outdoors hosted a great BBQ with the assistance of several volunteers, Nancy Jo, Gaby, Fern, Kim, Adrienne, and Karen. Thanks very much for helping out.
I think this event is gaining in popularity. Certainly there are many Canadians wanting to turn the tide. I look forward to next year.
