There were lots of tired people after the Round Bowen race on the previous weekend. Maybe that accounts for the low turn out. This was the first of our Theme nights. The every popular "Super Hero" Night.
Please be forewarned that we have some multi-sport nights coming up.
People alway grown about these races but they are tons of fun and help mix it up. After that it is Magnum PI NIght.
There were lots of good costumes: including the K4 team from Burnaby Canoe & Kayak Club. There was a duck creature, an Eco Friendly Klan Member, Super Man, Zorro...does he qualify as a super hero? But many paddler claimed ignorance.

Bob, has asked me to do a write-up for this past week. Apologies for any errors and omissions.
Weather Conditions: still ugly and Grey, tide was coming in....or was it going out....didnt matter I dont think.
Theme: Super hero night
Maui Jim Hot Spot: none this night
The race course appear to be simple (unfortunately i forgot it by the time i got to the starting line, but more on that later), go to 5kt can, head to Hamber keeping it on the right, then head to a light fixture somewhere past Hamber, come back to Hamber, then to 5kt can keeping it on the left and finishing at the dock.
The start was a bit different, all doubles (ski and kayak) and quads (there was a K4 out that night) started first, then 5 minutes later the rest of the gang.
Folks paddling double Fenn XTs (which by the way, are sold at DCCK ! Insert subliminal voice... buy more boats, buy more boats) were Mike & Cam Fitz, Marshall && Curtis, and Sean G. (in his Superman costume) and myself. The K4 was made up of the gang from Burnaby Lake, who had some very cool costumes. Oh yeah, one more double, making their debut appearance, Mo and Geoff in their brand spanking new Fenn Elite (yes, this too is sold at DCCK)
Sean and I seemed to be setting the pace with Mike/Cam sitting right next to us. (Note it didn't look like they were breaking a sweat). I could see Marshall/Curtis out of the corner of my eye so I knew this wasn't going to be an easy paddle.
Given both Sean and i suffer from short term memory loss, we didn't know the exact course, so once we passed Hamber we had to ask Mike which light we had to go around. After he graciously told us the correct course (thanks Mike) we kept the lead, rounding the light and headed back home. The rest of the way home was uneventful, other than once entering the Cove and getting close to the finish, Mike shouts to Cam "OK, paddle hard now", well, the front of their boat hopped out of the water from Cam's extra power and in no time flat they finished ahead of us by a boat length. Way to go guys and watch out for this Cam fellow, he kept a very fast pace and had a nice kick in the end.
Following us in were the super hero K4 team and then Marshall/Curtis. Mo and Geoff came in a bit later as they were most likely breaking their boat in gently....probably didn't want void any warranties by going too fast for the first few kilometres!
Back at the Raven i was able to see the results of the singles and man it was an interesting finish. Daryl and Warren were given a verbal DNF by Kim (who was the race marshall that night). And Yes, I did say Warren. Apparently, the normally mild mannered Warren was temporarily beckoned by Daryl to the 'dark side' and was.....wait for it.........RIDING BOAT WASH !!!!!!
Although the video could have been tampered with from the time the race finished to it got to the Raven, it did appear that Daryl/Warren were a bit behind the lead pack, then, bam...surf city.. and they were right up with the front runners.
Daryl crossed the finish line first with Gareth, Bob and maybe someone else (was it Ken Stanick??) then Warren. Much discussion was to be had at the Raven regarding the alleged boat wash ridings, and while Daryl appears to be sticking to the " I thought it was a big wave stemming from a naturally occurring event of wind and tide" story, Warren appears to have seen the error of his ways and rumour has it, was seen writing on a cocktail napkin 100 times " I will not be a boat wash hog".
Other favourites seen cruising on the water that night were Mickey, Rod, Greg, Claudette, Jen Stanick, Bernd, John George in a biadarka, and Gary Coulter (in his really nice new Epic 18x with rudder). It seems like it was a light turnout, maybe folks were resting from the Bowen race.
That's all i've got. See you folks on the water.
Gary
