Bob is away this week so he asked Warren/me (Gary C) to do a write-up.
Unfortunately, the safety boat was zipping all over the place keeping a watchful eye out on paddlers so review of the footage at the Raven comprised mostly of the start and reaching Belcarra park, not much after that, and we are writing this without being able to see the finish times, so apologies if we get things a bit off.
My 2 cents:
I'd say close to 10 SUPs were out there doing their thing. This was a long course to paddle and those folks really did affine job paddling as there was lots of bloat wake all over the place.
Andrea and I were in our double ski, and we didn't do any of the running or swimming (too many ankle and shoulder pains); however, once reaching Belcarra we then paddled to the swim point and were able to hang around and cheer on all of the brave souls doing the swim. The water was pretty cold there and 3 cheers for everyone that did the swim as it didn't look easy at all. It looked like the first few in the water were Alan Carlson, Terry, Jeff R. and John G/Andrew D. We stayed until the last few racers (Ken Boxall, Gary Coulter, and Sandee Doxtdator ) took the plunge, then headed back to the Cove. I am told the first few finishers were Alan, Terry, Jeff, and double team of John G/Andrew D.
Another great night for paddling, thanks to the DCKC team for their continued work to make this TNR such a fun event.
Warren's Report:
Here's a brief report from the front pack. I wasn't there long. Should have trained for the run. And the swim. After rounding the 5 knot can the lead pack consisted of Jim Nosella in the K1, Shane, Jeff, Shaun, John George and Andrew Dye in the double, and some stranger in the carbon V10 (turns out it was Alan Carlson).
The run was tough, technical and demeaning. Tough because I hadn't trained and hate being passed by all those SUP guys ( you can tell them by their long shorts) who you worked so hard to paddle around. Technical because the sharp rocks required watching where you were going. And demeaning because a number of people who passed me were running barefoot.
The swim was long because the tide was high and we couldn't take the shortcuts we did last year on which I remember Bob commenting:
" but it was here that many people thought that the word "beach" means a rocky outcropping. These people dove in the water and swam directly to shore and ran along the rocky outcropping. Last time I check "beach" meant sandy shoreline."
Bob, you'll be happy to know there was no confusion with the definition of "beach" this year.
A highlight of tonight's race was seeing Chris D. back on the water and going fast. He beat me to the 5 knot can but eased off a little on the way to the transition point for the run. He didn't run but waited for the runners to return. While waiting he saved a few boats and paddles from floating away on the rising tide. Thanks Chris.
