Race Route
Long course: Hamber / Jug Return
Short Course: Hamber to Seal Rocks ( about half way to Jug)
What a beautiful evening it was. After a cold spring with low attendance people were out in scores for the race. Our new SUP division had dwindled from the previous weeks 27, but the quality was high. Beau Whitehead and buddy from Bellingham made the trip up. If SUP racing world Beau is the Big Fish in our small local pond of Belligham / Vancouver / Seattle. At least I think he is.
Sea state was a bit choppy as we rounded the corner leaving Deep Cove and crossing the channel for Hamber. A bit of a head wind made it tough for the SUPers but they toughed it out including first time SUPer but long time Tuesday Night race Jenn Stannick. Jen put in a good performance. Lina beware!
The water was pretty shallow crossing between Hamber Island and the east mainland. My paddle hit the sandy bottom while crossing over the "tombolo". This strip of land dries at medium to low tide.
Incidentally, Hamber Island which was named after Eric Hamber, has been sold. it is a rare property which the owner have rights to the sea floor. They have plans to build a bridge to the Island and build a monster home on the Island. Oh good! They need to be able to drive their Hummer onto the Island. This was to have started last spring and I am not sure what the hold up has been.
As we paddled back to Jug several of the leader felt they didn't have enough of a lead and decided to take a short cut, while the law abiding group of Ben / Eric Fast, Shane and others went around the rock (Seal Rock for lack of another name) These renegades of the surf ski world are constantly flouting rules, questioning authority. They are widely considered the 'bad boys" for the surf ski racing scene, not un-like the Hell's Angels are compared to regular motorcycle riders. I have been told they all bare surf ski "gang" tattoos, and often not wanting to wear PFD's.
All joking aside it was great to see so many people out last night.
