Description: Hamber Island to Boulder and Return
Course Length: Distance about 5 km
Winner of the Maui Jim Hot Spot: Men's Surf Ski, Mike Fitzmaurice New rule for the MJHS, You can only win once.
The weather....was notable. It spiced up the race, as I felt like the big guy up in the sky was sprinkling marble sized salt on us. And me without a hat. The torrential down pour coincided with the start. I can honestly say I have never paddled in such conditions....and then the hail started. Vivienne caught it all on her camera. Be sure to check out her slide show.
Ben Fast who just turned 49 was back in the boat with long time partner John George. They lead for most of the race only to be scooped by that Drafting artful dodger Warren Bruce. Controversy erupted when the Rescue boat took the lead position for a photography vantage point. Unfortunately, paddlers were able to ride the wash all
the way to the MJ Hot Spot. Mike Fitz who happened to be at the
front road a wave away from the group. This is the second time Mike tried to win the Men's Surf Ski Hot Spot, but its only the first time he has been eligible. Protests were lobbied after the race, claiming that Mike had an unfair advantage, but the reality of the situation is that Mike would have probably won anyhow. He got on the wave because he was in the lead and was able to ride the wave.
We posted last weeks race April 19 on YouTube.
Next weeks video should be good with some great footage of the hail storm.
Starting next Wednesday I will be teaching a Learn to Surf Ski course. This will alternate each Wednesday with a forward stroke clinic. In the Learn to SS course we will cover, balance, posture and
seating position, bracing strokes, remounting and assisted remounts.
On the forward stroke course we will work on stroke efficiency. Also teaching you how to use Wing Blade. A well intentioned racer pointed out to me that many racers are using their wing blades like conventional paddles and not taking advantage of the Wing effect of the blade.
