A coolish night good for racing. Guest star of the night was long time Necky Kayak employee and" knower of all things related to kayaking" Dave Vanderveen. In a previous life Dave was a regular Tuesday Night Racer, but proximity and general busy-ness kept him away. Dave is now the Western Canadian Sale Rep for Necky Kayaks and was paddling Necky's new "Looksha Elite" Dave has been involved with every aspect of manufacturing kayaks and truly does know it all. He also does it all too and is a very accomplished paddler. Dave had a bit of a rude re-introduction to kayak racing. He went out hard, like the good old days, but as his chum and ex-Aquabound Paddle Rep, Craig Langford said so eloquently, "Dave went out like a rocket, and then you could almost see this puff of smoke shoot out from the back of Dave's head, I guess he blew a rod, and you could see the engine shutting down!"
The New Looksha Elite was design by long time Necky Boat designer Spike Gladwin, famous for pioneering the surfing hull for whitewater kayaks. The Looksha Elite is designed for intermediate to advanced paddler. After paddling it several times including on the Skookumchuk tidal rapid, my impressions is that it is a "do-all" touring kayak with an "efficient, waste-no-energy" hull. At 17' x 22" inches it falls into the Sea Kayak (SK) category. More than likely it will sit at the top of that category just like its predecessor, the Looksha II, did and still does in the Fast Sea Kayak (FSK) category. But unlike the Looksha II / III, the Looksha Elite is a very practical touring kayak with a sensible amount of rocker for rough water paddling, surfing and rock gardening.
The Maui Jim Hot Spot went to the 1st Men's Sea Kayak. This week's winner was Bernd Groll. We now stock Maui Jim, if you are not familiar with these great glasses, they are specially designed for water based sports with great polarization for cutting glare.
Thanks to all the guys who loaned out their surf skis for the Women's Surf Ski Clinic which was a big success. Without their generosity we could not have run this great.
