Description: Paddle to Lone Rock Pt.
Course Length: about 4 km
Race Commentary:
A reasonably good turn out for a coolish Tuesday Night. My weapon of choice was Think's prototype "Aleutski", a 15' light weight sit on top sea kayak. What a fun boat for somebody who may want an efficient hull in a sit-on-top form. Great for the summer tan. Deep Cove Outdoors is selling this for only $1400. It was pretty fast an really tracked well. I was able to stay ahead of all the sea kayaks and some of the surf skis, so I was impressed with its speed.
Its nice to see some of the new faces coming out, together with the regulars. New-comers always comment on what friendly crowd it is.
So it was the first night for the "Maui Jim Hotspot" MJHS. The purpose of the hotspot is to encourage a little bit of extra effort at the start of the race. We will use the 5 knot cans as markers. So as an example, women's single surf ski paddlers were eligible to win this weeks MJHS. The prize? A pair of MJ sunglasses of course. If you are not familiar with these glasses, they are very high end starting at $150. The winner receives a voucher for which you can pick any pair of MJ sunglasses at Deep Cove Outdoors. Valued up to $250!!! We only had 3 women on surf skis and they are went out hard. Robin T, Katja R, and Jodi B. Robin pushed to the front at the start but soon realized that her gas tank was drying up at about 600 metres. (more intervals required) The distance is about 800 metres. Katja held strong and edged out Jodi for the prize. Robin wasn't far behind. We will be changing the categories eligible for the prize each week.
