Revamped and renewed – the new V12 is a racing BEAST!
The OLD Epic V12 surfski was always a bit of an anomaly – it was quickly superseded by the V14 which was not too different, and was that much faster…so why would anyone choose the slower boat?
The NEW V12 surfski is a completely different animal. It is designed to be the ultimate downwind machine for elite level paddlers, and so has more rocker, a reconfigured cockpit for a dryer ride and a more responsive rudder position than before, all the while keeping a degree of extra stability over the V14, currently the fastest less stable boat in the fleet.
Epic is very serious about their rigorous testing of prototypes – and after testing several models in various locations around the world, the NEW V12 surfski is the best surfski for elite, open-water paddling, especially in big downwind. The new V12 is faster than the V10 on flatwater and is a good choice for those looking to move up. For highly skilled, elite level paddlers with perfect stability skills, the V14 will be slightly faster on flat water. But, as soon as the wind and waves pick up the new V12 will be their weapon of choice. For those of us mere mortals who want a really fast boat on flat water that can also handle rough stuff, the new V12 surfski is the one to go for.
It really is best to try and demo the boat to really understand how it performs, but in an attempt to describe it, the stability is similar to the original V12. It is noticeably more stable than the V14, but less stable than the Epic V10.
According to Epic, “the new V12 is faster than the V10, but not quite as fast as the V14 (for a highly skilled paddler). It has similar flatwater speed to the original V12, but is far superior in surf conditions.”
