Get Outside, Get Fit, Have Fun

Events & Races

Throughout the year we have events & races to get you excited about being outside, getting fit, and having fun!

Our events include Demo Days of both ski gear and paddling gear; Wax Clinics from experts like Graham Maclean; and talks and presentations from paddlers, skiers and experts from many different fields. Details will be posted below when events are coming up.

Waxing Skis for Events & Races

Our Nordic Skiing Tuesday Night Races take place up at Cypress Mountain from January to March, and include both classic and skate options, as well as different length courses depending on your experience and ability.

EVERYONE is welcome, regardless of ability, although you will have a much better time if you can ski the full loop without too much trouble 🙂 We have beginners to elite racers taking part – our aim is always just to get people together and out skiing!

Our sponsors include Fischer, Swix, Cypress Mountain, Madshus, Salomon and Craft, and each week we have draw prizes from them and others at the Hollyburn Lodge where we also enjoy dinner specials. The season culminates with a dinner to celebrate all the successes, also at the Hollyburn Lodge (pending opening), where our grand prizes are drawn.

Check in is from 6pm at the Nordic Cafe right by the ticket hut. The race start is at the Hollyburn Lodge at 7pm so you have time to warm up. Race results are posted on our blog each week. Any questions just call us at 604.987.2202 or email greatgear@deepcoveoutdoors.com

Paddling the Mackenzie River - Kevin Vallely

On July 4th, 2016 two young families set off to paddle the length of Canada’s largest and longest river, the mighty Mackenzie. Named Deh Cho, or “Big River,” by the Dene people, the free-flowing Mackenzie stretches 1750 kilometers from Great Slave Lake to the Arctic Ocean and is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. A paddle journey down the Mackenzie would be a challenge for any explorer but for two young families with three kids in tow it promised to be an adventure of a lifetime.

Recent studies have found the average child spends 35 hours a week in front of the television or computer monitor. Less than 25% of school-aged children participate in daily physical activity. The Paddle to the Arctic family adventure challenged this trend by allowing three youngsters to be fully immersed in a rugged wilderness experience.

Kevin Vallely is a writer, speaker and architect and was named one of Canada’s leading adventurers by the Globe and Mail. Kevin is a member of the Explorer’s Club and is an Explorer's Club Flag recipient. He holds the world record as a member of the fastest team to ski to the South Pole. He shares his stories of exploration and adventure through his photography, writing and speaking. For a list of some of previous expeditions please visit www.kevinvallely.com

Freya Hoffmeister - Circumnavigation of South America

Freya Hoffmeister is one of the world's most accomplished expeditionary kayaker. Come and hear her talk about her record-setting incredible journey around South America.

At: Bosa Centre for Film, Capilano University. Register by clicking the blue 'More Info' button to the right.

She paddled 27,000 km in 30 months of solo paddling in six legs. She started this historical “First” in Buenos Aires (Argentina), and rounded the infamous Cape Horn with getting in 60 knots winds and having to do an emergency crash landing on a remote island. The West coast performed with 4 m high swell waves, massive surf and very few safe landing possibilities. The crossing of the Panama Canal put her to the hot Caribbean where she had to fight headwinds and counter currents until Brazil, heat rashes, mosquitoes and the endless shallows and swamps of the Amazon area.

She survived an unintentional night side surf on the “Pororoca” tidal wave in the Amazon, which lasted about 8 km, 15 min and accelerated her up to 30 km/h,all in darkness. She managed numerous massive surf landings, reefs, and whatever else may be on her way until she will finish this epic journey successfully on May 3-2015. “THINK BIGGER!” is her motto for this trip. Freya is convinced no one ever will any time soon do this trip after her…
